Get started with Clicker Training!

Today I'm going to explain you, how you can teach your dog what the clicker (or a significant nois) means!

Our goal is:

To teach our dog that a click means treat. Whenever you use the clicker, immediately give a treat afterwards.
So whenever our dog hears the click, he should turn around and look at you, because he knows a treat will follow.

This will be very helpful for later on, when we start training commands and tricks.

The awesome thing about clicker training is, that it doesn't matter what kind of dog you have.
He/She can be a:
A highly concentrated Scottish Terrier I trained with last week

German Shepherd dog
Rottweiler
Jack Russel Terrier
Labrador
Border Collie
Pit Bull
Husky
American Staffordshire Terrier
Boxer
Puddle
Pug
Pomerian
Shi Tzu
Chihuahua
etc
etc

Not to mention all the wonderful crossbreeds out there! :)

It also doesn't matter if you have a puppy, an adult dog, an old dog, a handicapped dog or a hyper-active dog.

The clicker training is suitable for almost every dog! Amazing isn't it?

To condition your dog to the clicker, you simply need a clicker, treats, and your dog.

If your dog is with you, start to use the clicker and give a treat immediately afterwards.
You simply repeat this easy step:

Click. Treat. Click. Treat.

That way we make sure that our dog realizes that he ONLY gets a treat, when he hears the click.
You can practice that easy step for a few minutes and continue them throughout the day or during your daily walk.

Click. Treat. Click. Treat.

If you want to test if your dog already got the principle, simply use the click whenever he is doing something else.
If he immediately looks at you and even comes over, you know he got it!
Of course reward him with a treat again :)

Are you ready to get started?

Great!

Let me know how you get on!
